Nominet Announces Major .UK Domain System Overhaul Set for February 2027

The organization responsible for managing the United Kingdom’s country-code top-level domain, .uk, is preparing to introduce what it describes as the most significant operational changes in its 30-year history.

Nominet, the registry operator for .uk domains, has officially confirmed an implementation date of February 9, 2027 for its upcoming “.UK Standardization” program. The update will modernize several core aspects of how .uk domain registrations, transfers, and lifecycle events are handled.

These changes are expected to align the .uk namespace more closely with global domain industry standards, while also giving registrars more flexibility in how they manage domain portfolios.

Shift From “Push” to “Pull” Domain Transfers

One of the most important structural changes is the transition from a push-based transfer system to a pull-based system for moving domains between registrars.

How the current system works

Under the existing model, .uk domain transfers are typically initiated by the losing registrar. This is often referred to as a “push” system, where administrative control plays a central role in authorizing the move.

What will change in 2027

With the new framework, .uk will adopt a pull-based transfer model, which is already widely used across most global top-level domains such as .com, .net, and many ccTLDs.

In this system:

  • The gaining registrar initiates the transfer
  • The domain owner authorizes the move
  • The process becomes more standardized across the global domain ecosystem

This shift is expected to simplify cross-registry operations and reduce inconsistencies between domain extensions.

Optional Renewal Rules During Transfers

Another key update involves how renewal periods are handled when domains change registrars.

Under the new system, registrars will be able to:

  • Add an additional one-year renewal at the time of transfer (typically for an extra fee), or
  • Process the transfer without extending the registration period

This brings .uk closer to the flexible renewal models used in other major TLDs, where transfer and renewal are often combined into a single transaction—but not always required to be.

Changes to Domain Expiration and Deletion Policies

Nominet is also revising how expired domains are handled, introducing a more configurable lifecycle system for registrars.

Current model

At present, .uk domains generally follow an auto-delete cycle after expiration, meaning domains are eventually removed if not renewed in time.

New model

Under the upcoming changes, registrars will be able to choose between:

  • Auto-delete behavior, or
  • Auto-renew behavior

This change introduces more flexibility for domain providers and aligns .uk more closely with global registry practices, where auto-renewal is common.

Why These Changes Matter

While these updates may appear technical, they have broad implications for the domain industry:

  • Improved consistency with global domain transfer standards
  • Simplified registrar competition, since transfers become easier to manage
  • Greater flexibility for domain owners and hosting providers
  • Reduced friction in international domain portfolio management

For businesses operating across multiple regions, especially those managing large domain portfolios, these changes may significantly streamline administrative workflows.

A Historic Update for the .UK Namespace

Nominet’s decision to modernize its registry operations reflects the broader evolution of the domain industry, where legacy systems are increasingly being replaced by standardized global protocols.

If implemented as planned in February 2027, the “.UK Standardization” project will mark one of the most substantial structural updates to the .uk domain system since its creation.

The transition is expected to reshape how millions of .uk domains are transferred and maintained for years to come.
